Women Reservation and Constitutionalism
In
India, women were measured to be kept inside the house for the service of their
in-laws, children, and husband. Their rights were not secure and they were not
given equal opportunity in any of the aspects whether it may be social, economic,
political, or cultural.
For
giving exposure to the women as Indian society should feel that the women are
not less than a man in any aspect begins the reservation for women.
By
the constitutional amendment in 1993, for random one-third of a village council
leader or Pradhan position in gram panchayat to be reserved for women.
The reservations
for the women in the education, election, research and social systems changed
the perception of the women’s ability for doing things by open the doors of new
beginning.
For the
long-term plan to extend this reservation to parliament as well as legislative
assemblies. For instance, some law schools in India have up to 30% reservation
for females. Many progressive political sentiments in India are sturdily in
favor of providing preferential treatment to women to create a level playing
field for all the citizens.
In
the Rajya Sabha on 9th March 2010 passed the bill of reservation for
women by the majority of vote i.e. 186 members in favor and 1 in against, but
still of march 2020, the Lok Sabha has not voted on the bill.
Some
people criticisms on the reservation for women, as gender cannot be held as a
basis for reservation alone other factors should also be considered e.g. social,
economic conditions of woman candidate especially when applying reservation for
educated women. But for the giving exposure to the women, it can’t be the valid
reason for heling it out. As society still facing the discrimination of women.
There
also is an increase in raising the demand for reservation for women in
pre-existing reservations like SC/ST, OBC, physically disabled, etc. Some
feminist groups still request that reservation for women should be at least fifty
percent as they comprise fifty percent of the populace.
